Virtue - A School Project

Got curious students in your classroom? Looking for simple ways to foster scientific literacy? Then we suggest that you and your students try Virtue!

The idea is simple: A number of CDs are mounted on a rack and placed in different underwater environments during different seasons. Analysing the growth of organisms on discs and registering the findings in a database or on paper enables the students to compare and discuss their results.

Virtue is for students of any age

Virtue can be used with students of any age, from pre-school to adults. It’s easy to adapt to different students’ needs. Younger children are fascinated by what they see and want to learn more about life under the surface.

For older students, Virtue can be used in several subjects, including biology, mathematics, environmental science and physics. The project is cheap and easy to set up, and it works year-round! Virtue also works great as an upper-secondary diploma project.

Swedish schools can order complete rack from us. For international schools, please contact the project leader. The Virtue discs are in fact the raw product used in CDs and DVDs, and an instruction how to build a Virtuerack is available in the Virtue introduction.

Virtue and real estate management – do you see the connection?

Virtue is much more than a school science project. It’s also real estate management – kind of. Project leader Mikael Olsson explains:

Many young people are looking for housing – a place to call home. So do many animals and other living organisms in our lakes and seas. More exactly, they are looking for a surface to settle on. But, just like in the human world, most good places are already taken – the competition is fierce!

Let pupils and students be real estate managers for a moment. Let them offer free housing in small but well-planned five-storey buildings to the many homeless organisms in lakes and seas. Let the students watch and describe who moves in, when they move in, how they arrange their new homes, whether they take in roommates and a lot more.
