Chemistry at University of Gothenburg

All living organisms are controlled by chemical reactions. Chemistry plays a big part in our daily lives and for our society and chemists are needed across a broad spectrum of activities, particularly in development and conservation.

Chemistry is the study of the elemental building blocks of life - the molecules. Everything that exists, including ourselves, is made of molecules and all events around us are controlled by molecular reaction, based on how molecules behave in different situations.

As a chemist, your working area spans from microscale, for example investigating how a certain type of body cells reacts with a certain combination of molecules, up to the the global level. For instance you can study how chemical reactions in the oceans and the atmosphere influence the climate, or you powerful processes taking place in space, for example how gases and matter change and interact.

Great career opportunities

There is a great demand for knowledge in analytical chemistry in almost every area of work that has a chemical profile. Well-educated chemists are needed across a broad spectrum of activities, both in the private and the public public sector. You may choose to work on various chemical companies, in the pharmaceutical industry, with food companies, on laboratories, with environmental protection or to do a career in higher education or research.
